Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is one of many joint disorders that can result in hypermobility, which may not cause pain or acute symptoms but does put you at much higher risk for joint pain, dislocation, and other conditions if left untreated. Ehlers-Danlos is also correlated with symptoms of fatigue, sleep disorders, and changes in mood.
Diagnosing hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) is a detailed process that involves identifying primary and corroborating symptoms. To be diagnosed with hEDS, a person typically presents with one of the following symptoms:
In addition to having hypermobile joints now or in the past, patients with hEDS will also have one of the following corroborating symptoms:
Other symptoms can indicate hEDS during a formal Ehlers-Danlos diagnostic evaluation at one of our clinics.
Although you may not currently be in pain, having hypermobile joints is a risk factor for injury, dislocated joints, and other health conditions that may otherwise go unaccounted for in future healthcare needs. Besides receiving a diagnosis that will help you receive better care in the future, our physical therapists can help treat hypermobility pain and discomfort by:
These and other techniques we might utilize seek to build muscle tissue in loose or hypermobile joints to strengthen and support them and prevent dislocation. We also provide posture and balance training to guide the body into safe, stable postures for the same reason.
Not everyone with hypermobile joints will be diagnosed with hEDS because there are many similar conditions that can also be treated proactively with physical therapy. At Peak Performance, we’re hoping to raise awareness of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome for the way in which it can seemingly sneak up on patients, causing chronic or worsened symptoms of other conditions.
If the symptoms listed here sound familiar to you or a loved one, it doesn’t hurt to get a formal diagnosis before your health begins to suffer.
Our Peak Performance offices each specialize in certain treatments, and our Garner location is one of only a few physical therapy offices with hypermobility experts who can diagnose and treat EDS.

She is so easy to work with and always ready to answer questions and tailor the exercises to the exact issues I am experiencing. What can I say...only wonderful things about Garner PP. Taylor and all of her staff are so welcoming and friendly! But most importantly, so knowledgeable. I have learned more from Taylor than any other doctor. She's helped me recover from 2 hip replacements and now with PMR. Not only is she great at actual therapy but she has been a wealth of knowledge about my conditions. I HIGHLY recommend Garner for anyone needing PT and someone who listens to all symptoms and then gives a thorough assessment of what needs to be done to help. Trish StolfiPosted on Google![]()

On top of that, the atmosphere in the clinic is great and I always left in a better mood.Posted on Google![]()

I loved my time at Peak Performace! I went in with back and neck pain, and came out with an EDS diagnosis from Taylor that finally made sense alongside a treatment plan. Both Julia and Taylor provided hands-on and informative care and have prepared me for my at-home long-term movement plan! Only PTs I plan to go to while living in Raleigh!Posted on Google![]()

The physical therapists at Peak Garner are incredible. I went in for POTS and hypermobility and I feel like this is the only doctor who listens to me. I work with Taylor Quaglia and she has jumped through hoops advocating for me and going the extra mile to help me both to improve and get better but also advocating for me with other doctors. This is the only thing helping me with chronic pain and helping me avoid syncope episodes. If you have dysautonomia, PT often works us too hard, Taylor understands and is compassionate and supports you without causing a crash. I graduate soon but refuse to move out of the triangle so I can keep seeing Taylor because this is the only thing that helps.Posted on Google![]()

Taylor Quaglia is incredibly knowledgeable about EDS, POTS, MCAS, and all the other special things that go along with that. She truly cares. I have seen her for a long time now, along with two of my teenagers, who also adore her. Taylor listens, and brainstorms through the possibilities to find the best solution for you!Posted on Google![]()
